Fun fact: Easterners like to hedge their bets.

The path to the beach in any respectable New England hideaway tends to be paved with tall, green hedges. Carefully maintained leafy buffers skirting the edge of the property perpetuate the mystery of what lies beyond.

There’s something both comforting and mysterious about a privet hedge. Within the confines of a maintained living wall, one feels protected and hidden from the world. From the outside, the high leafy barrier hints at the backyard soirees and wistful summer days spent within. From Nantucket to the Hamptons, boxwoods and their relatives serve as a reminder that it is beach season once again, when the shores swarm with potentially nosy guests whose imaginations must be left to wonder about the lives led behind the hedge.
